The Third Eye Chakra and its meaning for the human body
The Third Eye Chakra is sometimes also referred to as the Brow Chakra and is located at the center of the forehead slightly above the brows. According to Hindu tradition it is the 6th primary chakra of the human body with an indigo to violet color. The main aspects governed by this chakra are communication with the soul, intuition, higher wisdom, clairvoyance, visions and fantasy.
The brow or third eye chakra houses the pure presence of our soul and connects us to our higher intuition and soul guidance. Through this chakra we become able to extend our perception over physical reality and experience that we are much more than our body.
On a physical level the third eye chakra is associated with the face, eyes, ears and nose, the sinuses, the cerebellum and the central nervous system. It further governs the pineal gland. As the name suggests, the pineal gland has the form of a little pine that shows the remaining qualities of a former photoreceptor, which may explain why it is called third eye. The pineal gland produces Melatonin that governs our sleep rhythms and seems to play an important role in the sustainment of human health and youthfulness.
With an active open chakra people further tend to have a vivid fantasy and are capable of extensive visualisations. The third eye chakra enables us to have deep spiritual experiences of the cosmic consciousness and to develop capabilities like telepathy, clairvoyance or astral travelling. People with an open third eye chakra are able to recognize the connection of everything there is and to see and interpret signs and synchronicities occurring in their lives.
Blockages in the brow chakra usually cause us to become delusional, unimaginative, and indifferent and to have poor memories. People with a blocked 6th chakra tend to worry a lot, easily space out and have problems to concentrate.
How to open the Third Eye Chakra
For the opening of the third eye chakra it may be necessary to adjust our life style. The higher our consciousness rises in the chakras and therefore our energy and frequency, the more important it becomes to adjust our diet. We should avoid eating a lot of grounding products (i.e. meats) and include more and more organic raw vegetables that will support an uplifting of our energy. Also, we need to reduce the intake of fluoride to a minimum (tooth paste, water), as this will further calcify the pineal gland and disconnect us from higher guidance. We should spend as much time as possible in a natural environment (forests, mountains, etc.).
When we focus on the concentration of our intuition as well as intensive experiences of our inner world through meditations. Review your belief systems and let go of fear that is clouding your mind and hindering you of connecting with your higher guidance. We have to develop trust into this higher guidance without over questioning everything. Once we start seeing the true nature of things without evaluating them and try to concentrate on subtle notions and feelings we will support the opening and activation of the third eye chakra.
The use of third eye chakra stones and crystals during meditations, as support for energy work or simply worn as jewellery are very helpful, too. Generally, all indigo to violet but also clear stones and crystals will support the brow chakra.
Third chakra opening symptoms range from tingling or even pain in the area of the third eye, pressure in the head up to headaches, sound and light sensitivity and of course increasing intuition and foresight.

The Third Eye Chakra Symbol
The third eye chakra is usually depicted as a two pedaled violet or indigo lotus around a white circle with an interlaced white triangle and the seed syllable “OM” or “AUM”. In Vedic tradition the two pedals show the mantras “HAM” and “KSHAM”, representing the two poles in our dual physical world like male and female, solar / lunar, mind / matter. In Vedic interpretations the third eye chakra symbol sometimes depicts the hermaphrodite deity Ardhanishvara, which is half Shiva, half Parvati. The “OM” in the centre of the symbol shows us our ability to overcome the concept of duality and connect to the higher wisdom behind the apparent polarities through our third eye chakra. The union of the dualities becomes also apparent in the color of the third eye chakra symbol. The color violet or indigo is an offspring of the primary colors red (related to matter) and blue (related to mind) and forms as such a new and different color. Violet has always been regarded as a color of the mind and spirituality. The circle, the triangle and the OM are usually depicted in a white color. White is not only the color of purity and clarity, but also comprises the sum of all colors of the rainbow.
